VEHICLE INFORMATION MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

Vehicle Information Management System (VIMS) is a set of modules to collect the information about vehicles, analyse and manage the collected information to the benefit of a transport organization. Details like speed, start and end time of a vehicle, over speed, brake, fuel consumption and timings and other useful information about the vehicle are important to manage a transport system.

The VIMS system is implemented as three stages. The first state is a black box that is mounted to a vehicle. The black box collects necessary data from the vehicle. The next stage is to collect the stored data from the black box to a centralized data analysis PC on which the VIMS software is installed to perform the analysis.

Vehicle Information Management system consists of 3 modules

    1. Vehicle Black Box.
    2. Hand held terminal
    3. VIMS application software

Vehicle Black Box records vehicle data like speed, runtime, trip duration etc dynamically. The hand held instrument is the intermediate device to collect the stored data from the vehicle black box and to provide it to the centralized PC on which the information analysis done using VIMS application software.

The data from black box is downloaded to the hand held instrument usually a simputer through serial port. The data on the simputer is then fed to the PC or a secondary storage device through USB or through ethernet ports.

The VIMS application software interprets the stored data and provides useful information as human interpretable text and/or graph.
